"If employees' houses cost less, they have more discretionary income and are more likely to stay, saving business owners the cost of attracting good employees."

- James Pavik, The Pavik Group

Labor Force/Market

Northern Nevada and Fernley/Lyon County have a rapidly growing quality workforce. Nevada is a right-to-work state, which prevents labor organizations from establishing "close-shop" policies that preclude hiring non-union personnel. Northern Nevada has several outreach programs that work directly with Nevada companies to develop programs, train employees, and assist in recruiting employees.

The popularity of Northern Nevada is on the rise. Worldwide companies such as Microsoft, Honeywell, UPS, Amazon.com, Quebecor World, General Motors and Cisco Systems have chosen to locate divisions of their operations in the area. A senior manager of worldwide operations for Cisco Systems, Inc., Northern Nevada has secured many great candidates for open positions, stating that “The caliber of qualified employees we’ve been able to recruit in Financial Services has been fantastic.” For other positions and levels, Cisco has set up an expanded training program for employees in Northern Nevada. The two-week program “helps new employees understand the Cisco culture and how their actions can impact the organization – both upstream and downstream on a daily basis. The program really helps identify those employees who are willing to step up to the plate.”

Nevada offers numerous training programs for employers. Listed below is a partial list of the organizations which provide these services:

Train Employees Now Program (TEN): Nevada offers a state funded, matching grant program which ensures new and existing employers access to a skilled work force. The TEN program operates in conjunction with various state agencies and the Federal Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA). It offers up to 90 days of on-the-job training in which the employer will be reimbursed up to 75% of the total eligible costs. Training is provided only for employees whose average wage is 80% of the statewide average wage. A maximum of $1,000 per employee is available for customized training.

Job Opportunities in
Nevada (JOIN): JOIN is a federally funded job training program which offers services to retrain dislocated or disadvantaged workers through classroom and on-the-job training. Some services include recruitment, assessment/testing, applicant skill development, supplemental and customized training, new employee costs and training cost reimbursement.

Nevadaworks
Nevadaworks coordinates workforce development to meet the needs of employers in Northern Nevada and provides funding to program service partners in its service area to work directly with a diverse population of individuals who are seeking employment, skills upgrading, or are entering the workforce for the first time.

Western Nevada Community College
The Western Nevada Community College provides training to new employees from private industries in the Fernley, Fallon, Dayton, and Carson City area.

Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC): TMCC provides initial skills training in areas such as: welding, forklift operation and safety, database and word processing, plus customized industry specific programs. They also offer courses in their standard curriculum that can be put toward a college degree.

Technical Institute, Edison Campus: TMCC's Technical Institute houses the Applied Industrial Technology programs and provides students with education and training in one or more career-oriented programs. The Institute also supplies advanced training for employed and skilled technicians and craftsmen.

Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation: The department’s primary mission is to operate a no-fee labor exchange, which matches qualified workers with available jobs. This agency administers the Department of Employer Services, which has a specialized staff working in tandem with employers to coordinate and facilitate job placement. Services include advertising, application screening and placement. In addition, employers may receive cost reimbursement through programs such as the Claimant Employment Program (CEP) and Veteran's Services.

Over 60% of the currently employed work force in Fernley commutes to either Reno or Fallon for their employment. This is good news as it demonstrates an immediate and viable work force of thousands that are readily employable. The resounding sentiment of Fernley residents is very welcoming toward industrial development and local jobs creation. In addition to this local work force, there is also an existing work force of over 300,000 within a 25 to 30 minute radius of Crossroads Commerce Center.
